Congratulations to the 2010 Writing Contest Winners!
The World in Potsdam Diversity Festival is a celebration of cultures, especially the diverse international cultures that are represented by residents of the North Country. At the Festival, people from around the world will share dances, food, games, songs, and poetry, and other forms of culture.
We invite you to contribute to our World in Potsdam Diversity Festival Writing Contest, which is cosponsored by the SUNY Potsdam College Writing Center.

Summary of Theme for Grades 5 and below: Imagine that you are away on a trip to participate in an important festival celebrated by a culture other than your own. Choose one of five festivals listed in the contest guidelines. Write a letter addressed to a friend in Potsdam in which you tell this friend what you are learning on this trip. Attach a handmade illustration. Details.
Summary of Theme for Grades 6-8: Imagine that you have been invited to plan a trip to three foreign countries, all expenses paid, in order to become a junior ambassador. You will have to show that your particular trip can open your mind to other cultures and prove the truth of Mark Twain's statement that "Travel is fatal to prejudice . . . and narrow-mindedness." Write a letter describing your trip and how it will achieve these goals. Details.
Summary of Global Service Theme for Grades 9-12: Imagine that you have been invited to submit a plan for a service year abroad, to take place after you complete high school. Your plan entails working on a problem in a developing country outside of the United States and Europe. If your plan is accepted, it will be fully funded, with the understanding that you will use what you have learned to become an agent of change in the global community. Write a letter proposing your service year abroad. Details.
Summary of Global Music Theme for Grades 9-12: You are an artist who has been inspired by a collection of international music. You have decided that one particular piece will shape a story. Create the story by listening closely to one of the musical selections from the list provided in the contest guidelines. Details.
